Democracy is hanging by a thread throughout Afghanistan – it is a weak and failing state where radical Islamist extremists, terrorists and irregular adversaries collide with U.S. and allied forces on a regular basis. Although it has been stated publically that terrorist and Lashkar Gah Resistance forces have been routed, most governments privately believe the fledgling Democratic Government will fail as infighting and resurgent forces reenter the area.
The choice between saving a weak but functioning state from collapse and conducting a major, direct U.S. intervention to rebuild a functioning state from scratch is an easy one to make - the money to do so, is a harder one. As economic pressure, political grandstanding and government shutdown continues into its sixth month, the U.S. is reluctant to reengage in ISAF held areas restricting the U.S. to surgical strikes and smaller missions. The hope is that these Ultra-light Quick Reaction Forces can tackle specific missions allowing the Afghani Militia time to train and establish their own civilian and military forces.
To this end, the 5th UQRF Detachment operating out of Camp Leatherneck, has been sent to Helmand Province in the mountains of South East Afghanistan to route and destroy the Lashkar Gah Resistance, which Intelligence Reports indicate the resurgent Taliban forces have begun reoccupying and controlling the Anarjoy Road.
